Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images)A Penn State football alumnus was taken far too early this week as 37-year-old Mike Gasparato passed away on Thursday. Gasparato’s passing following a long battle with cancer, tumors, and blood clots.Gasparato was recruited by Penn State as a running back in 2000. He was a backup who received his most extensive play in the 2002 season, rushing for 158 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries.The final play of his college career was a 22-yard touchdown run against UCF in the 2004. He suffered an injury on the play that ended his playing career.Per Lions247, former Penn State offensive lineman Chris McKelvy, who was recruited in the same year as Gasparato, praised how he valiantly fought against his illness.“We are all proud of how Mike approached attacking cancer,” McKelvy said. “He approached it like he did football. He accepted the challenge with a positive attitude and a fighting spirit. He was a great teammate and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, our friend.”Gasparato underwent treatment for testicular cancer in January 2018 before discovering numerous tumors and blood clots later that year.
