Sarri delighted with ‘reaction’ for Chelsea win at Watfordby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveChelsea boss Maurizio Sarri was pleased with their victory at Watford on Wednesday night.Eden Hazard scored twice as Chelsea gained a hard-fought win at Watford to reclaim fourth place in the Premier League table. The Belgian opened the scoring when he collected Mateo Kovacic’s pass, took the ball around goalkeeper Ben Foster and calmly finished for his 100th Blues goal.Chelsea’s lead only lasted two minutes until Roberto Pereyra volleyed past Kepa Arrizabalaga from the edge of the 18-yard box.But Hazard grabbed his second of the match in the second half when he converted a penalty after Foster had bundled him over.Sarri told Sky Sports: “I think we played a good match with a good level of determination and attention for 90 minutes. We could have won with another result. we missed three or four good opportunities but I’m happy with the reaction. It was dangerous for us when they conceded, but we reacted well and we didn’t stop playing our football.”On Eden Hazard’s performance, he added: “I think he played very well, not only for his two goals, but he was good with his teammates and in open spaces. I like him in every position he is a great player.”In this moment we need this solution because we need to be more solid defensively and with this system we can score and become more solid in the defensive phase. Maybe in the last match, we played better in the first half than we did tonight, but today the application was very good.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

Canadian writers, actors and women’s rights advocates joined a contentious international boycott of Twitter on Friday after the social media platform became mired in the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal. The women’s boycott started at midnight Thursday in New York and was to last 24 hours. It stirred intense debate, however, about whether silence even for a day is the way to fight abuse — a discussion that played out as women of colour refused to participate, noting it took a white celebrity’s issue to finally prompt such action. It all began after actor Rose McGowan, a vocal critic who has accused “HW” of raping her, was briefly suspended Wednesday for tweeting a personal phone number.Actors such as Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow have joined a growing list of women accusing Weinstein of sexual harassment over the last two decades. He has denied through a spokeswoman any allegations of non-consensual contact.Twitter’s move to briefly freeze McGowan’s account incensed users who said far more serious breaches, including threats against women, are ignored.“Count me in!” posted Canadian-born actor Anna Paquin, who welcomed any men wanting to show their support under the trending hashtag #WomenBoycottTwitter.American actor Alyssa Milano tweeted Thursday it would be her first day in over 10 years off Twitter. “Join me,” she added.Model Chrissy Teigen told her almost 8 million followers that she was “boycotting for many reasons.”“To stand with the victims of sexual assault, online threats and abuse. And to boycott the fact our demented … president can tweet nuclear threats of war I can’t even see,” she posted Thursday.Cam Gordon, a spokesman for Twitter Canada, said Friday the company wasn’t commenting. Instead, he referred to prior posts from Twitter’s safety branch, explaining McGowan’s account was temporarily locked “because one of her Tweets included a private phone number, which violates our Terms of Service.”Canadian television writer Emily Andras, known for the series Wynonna Earp, said the boycott is about respect.“The only thing I like more than tweeting is knowing women’s voices are respected — on Twitter. So bye for now,” she posted.Still, the boycott raised awkward issues for many social media users.“I’m really torn because women going away and leaving platforms, leaving various spaces, is the goal of misogynists,” said Julie Lalonde, an Ottawa-based sexual violence prevention educator with 15,200 Twitter followers.“They would love nothing more than for women to shut up and go away. So, I think what would have been more effective was if men had boycotted Twitter — if men would have used their collective privilege and power to say: ‘We’re going to leave the platform until (it) takes violence against women seriously and treats all users in the same way.’”Still, Lalonde stressed Friday the boycott had already succeeded for the discussion it sparked. What she called Twitter’s “hypocritical” suspension of McGowan unleashed simmering outrage over online abuse, she added in an interview.“This is the same platform that harbours white supremacists. It’s the same platform where people can create multiple accounts to target a user like myself and not have it be a violation of its policies.“It’s that double standard that’s really, really frustrating.”Rather than take the day off Twitter, women of colour and their supporters used the hashtag #WOCAffirmation to promote each other and lambaste how often they’re overlooked.Tanzina Vega, a national reporter on race and inequality for CNN, said women of colour “are silenced regularly” and that it has happened to her.“That has to be recognized,” she tweeted Friday.Former NFL wide receiver turned filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry tweeted in support of “black women on here who deal w/ harassment daily & never get the same support.”Other men joined the boycott, including American actor Mark Ruffalo, who tweeted Thursday that “Tomorrow I follow the Women.”The office of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a self-described feminist, declined to weigh in on the protest. But Trudeau included a pointed line Friday in his speech to Mexico’s Senate.“Violence against women and girls is prevalent in all facets of life, from the studios of Hollywood to the digital public squares to our halls of Parliament,” he said in Mexico City.“As a gender balanced Senate, I challenge you to use your position and power to strongly push for the rights of women and girls in Mexico and around the world.”Follow @suebailey on Twitter.
New Delhi: Delhi Police on Sunday arrested three men and apprehended one juvenile near Sanyog Vihar for robbing a cab driver at gunpoint in the wee hours of Saturday morning. One of the accused, Jasveer (24) was a driver with an online ride-hailing service and was fired because of inappropriate behaviour. Police claim the robbery was planned as a means to exact revenge for his dismissal.According to police, Jasveer booked a cab from the same company he used to work at through an old SIM card around 2 am. He then boarded the cab with the three others accused in the case. A few minutes after, Gurpreet (19), who was in the passenger seat of the vehicle forcefully stopped the cab and pointed a country-made pistol at him. The four youth robbed the driver of all his valuables, including Rs 3,000 in cash, a Bluetooth speaker and his mobile phone. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murderAccording to the driver, who made the PCR call following the robbery, the assailants tried to grab the car keys as well, but they broke the key sensor in the process and fled. Special Staff from Dwarka apprehended the accused within a day by developing leads through confidential informants in the area and a cursory check revealed the third accused as one Akash (22) and the fourth person involved in the robbery as a juvenile male. Gurpreet, Jasveer, and Akash were caught in a trap by the Special Staff team and were found to be riding a motorcycle with fake number plates. Background checks into the accused revealed that Gurpreet was previously arrested in connection with a murder and spent some time in prison. Interrogation of the three accused further revealed that the four had decided to rob a cab to celebrate Jasveer’s girlfriend’s birthday with whatever they could steal.
New Delhi: Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) should be brought under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime as it will ensure a level playing field for the domestic airline industry, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu said. He said input costs should be competitive for any sector and the ministry has been of the strong view that the fuel should be brought under the GST regime. Different rates of taxes in states pushes the price of ATF, he said. “Each state has a different tax. Due to this, the refuelling (for airlines) cost completely changes. We feel that it should be done. I hope the GST Council takes a call on that and we are pursuing this with the council continuously. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscal”We will work on it that aviation fuel should also be brought under GST for predictability and for ensuring level playing field,” the minister said in an interview. Airlines have been demanding inclusion of ATF in the new indirect tax regime. Airlines could expect an annual relief of up to Rs 5,000 crore by way of input tax credit if ATF is brought under GST. The move could cushion them from the burden of increased jet fuel prices, besides providing relief to customers.
New Delhi: Legendary Sachin Tendulkar has categorically refuted all allegations of Conflict of Interest levelled against him as he claimed to have neither “received any compensation” nor holding any decision making role in the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. Tendulkar on Sunday filed a 14-point written response to a notice sent by Ombudsman cum Ethics Officer Justice (Retd) DK Jain. It was with regards to a Conflict of Interest complaint filed by the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) member Sanjeev Gupta. Also Read – We will push hard for Kabaddi”s inclusion in 2024 Olympics: RijijuAs per the complainant, Tendulkar and Laxman are allegedly performing dual roles, first of a “support staff” in their respective IPL franchises Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and second as members of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). “At the outset, the Noticee (Tendulkar) denies the contents of the Complaint in totality (except the statements specifically admitted herein). No part of the Complaint should be deemed to be admitted by the Noticee for lack of specific denials,” Tendulkar wrote in his response which is in possession of PTI. Also Read – Djokovic to debut against Shapovalov at Shanghai MastersSince Gupta’s complaints harped specifically on Tendulkar’s role in the MI, the iconic cricketer in his response have made a full disclosure of his role in the franchise. “The Noticee (Tendulkar) has received no pecuniary benefit/ compensation from the Mumbai Indians IPL Franchise in his capacity as the Mumbai Indians ‘ICON’ since his retirement, and is certainly not employed with the Franchise in any capacity. “He does not occupy any position, nor has he taken any decision (including selection of team players) which could qualify as being in governance or management of the Franchise. Accordingly, there is no conflict of interest, either under the BCCI Rules or otherwise,” world’s leading run-getter further explained. As far as his role in the CAC is concerned, Tendulkar mentioned that he was appointed as a member of the BCCI committee in 2015, which was only years after his involvement with the MI. “The Noticee was appointed to the panel of the Cricket Advisory Committee (“CAC”) in the year 2015. The Hon’ble Ethics Officer will appreciate that the Noticee was named as the ‘ICON’ for Mumbai Indians much prior to his empanelment with the CAC – which fact has always been in the public domain. “Accordingly, the BCCI aware of the Noticee’s association with the Mumbai Indians Franchise at the time of his appointment to the CAC.” Tendulkar, in his disclosure, further makes it clear that the role of an icon — the one he is performing right now in the IPL franchise team — in no way is a position either in the management or the governance of the franchise. “The Complaint wrongly assumes that the Noticee’s association with the Mumbai Indians IPL Franchise ( Franchise ) is in the capacity of “governance”, “management” or “employment” – thereby attracting a conflict under Rule 38 (4). “His role is limited to providing guidance to the Franchise team by sharing his insights, learnings and working closely with the younger members in the team to help them realise their true potential.” On his reply to Gupta’s question of him sitting in the team’s ‘dugout’ — place specified for players and support staff only — he termed the allegation as “absurd”. “A mentor cannot be qualified as “management” of the Franchise. If the Complainant’s absurd logic were to be applied, a physiotherapist, trainer or a masseur would also be qualified as “management” of the Franchise,” Tendulkar responded, making it clear that he is answerable to none of the support staff. “It is also pertinent to note that the Mumbai Indians team has a head coach, who works side by side with coaches for specific disciplines such as bowling, batting etc. in ultimate coordination with the Director of Cricket Operations – none of whom the Noticee is answerable to or vice versa since his role is limited to that of providing guidance and motivation to the team.” Also, in case of the Ombudsman willing to “continue proceedings”, Tendulkar has requested for a “personal hearing along with his legal representatives.”
The list of sub-par quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl despite being nothing more than “game managers” just grew by one. FiveThirtyEight’s own Walt Hickey has joined the ranks of Brad Johnson, Doug Williams and Trent Dilfer.Sure, Walt did it in a video game, while the other three did it while wearing cleats in real life, but the taste of victory was just as sweet. Walt’s triumph is courtesy of two Madden savants, Tim Curry and Luke Barr, who answered the call on our sports podcast Hot Takedown a few weeks ago. We laid down a challenge to see if anyone could win it all in Madden NFL 16 with Walt as their quarterback. Curry and Barr turned Walt’s depressing player ratings into a championship.Below are notes the two victors sent us about their journeys. As promised, we’ll be giving them a shoutout on this week’s podcast and sending them a signed poster of Walt in full pads.Curry, who won with the Philadelphia Eagles, provides a thrilling game report:I have done it. After smacking the Cowboys in the divisional game and beating the Seahawks in the NFC championship, Walt Hickey and the Eagles defeated the Buffalo Bills in an epic comeback, 21-17. After falling behind 14-0, Walt threw a pick with less than a minute left in the first half, leading to a Bills field goal. But the Eagles came out swinging in the second half, with Ryan Mathews taking a pitch from Walt 80 yards to the house. In the fourth quarter, Mathews hit another long option run, being caught at the 10. This time DeMarco Murray took it in for 6, bringing the game to 17-14 with just under two minutes to play. After the Bills recovered the onside kick attempt, the Eagles brought the house to stop the run three times, using up all three timeouts, but getting the ball back at their own 20 with 1:30 left. This time it was a mix of Murray and Mathews leading the way, with Murray taking a short pass 20 yards and Mathews finding another 30 on a pitch. With just under a minute, DeMarco found the end zone to give the Eagles the lead. The defense held, and Walt Hickey was a Super Bowl champion! And here’s Barr, who won with the Dallas Cowboys:Some observations:I ended with an 11-5 record, the 2nd seed and a first-round bye.He cannot throw downfield. Any throw more than ten yards downfield was almost always intercepted. The best routes to run were definitely screens and swing passes, he could hit those fairly reliably.Curl routes against bad cornerbacks in man coverage were also okay, but if he missed, it was usually an interception.I chose the Cowboys to play with because I thought the offensive line would help. Joseph Randle led the league in rushing with 1759 yards. Before the season I signed free agents Aldon Smith and Terence Newman and traded a draft pick for CB Josh Robinson. Terence Newman led the league in INTs with 12.Hickey’s quarterback rating of 42.6 was actually better than Matt Flynn’s who had a 40.2 rating on 76 attempts.Of Hickey’s 1872 yards, 1457 were gained after the catch. Here is Walt’s game log, individual stats and team stats. Walt is galled that, as a New York Giants fan, he won the Super Bowl with the Eagles and Cowboys. But that does make him better than Tony Romo and Sam Bradford. So he’s got that, at least. And there you have it. Once again, congrats to Tim and Luke. Now please go outside. Read more: How Madden Helped A Schlub Like Me Make It Into The NFL
8/31/075135-16 4/17/064836-12 POLL DATEYANKEESMETSMETS MARGIN 3/24/146127-34 Move over, New York Yankees — there’s a new baseball boss in town. For the first time since at least 1998, Quinnipiac University has found, more New York City baseball fans liked the Mets than the Yankees. Although it was a narrow victory — 45 percent to 43 percent, well within the margin of error — it shows that winning ballgames remains the key to winning the hearts of Big Apple sports fans. The Yankees usually hold a hefty fan advantage over the Mets in New York. Over the last 20 years, the Yankees have averaged a sizable 55 percent-to-31 percent lead over their crosstown rivals. Just three years ago, the Yankees led the Mets 61 percent to 27 percent on the same question Quinnipiac asked this year. 3/25/095655-133429 3/16/005235-17 10/19/004337-6 Average5554-1334310 6/1/126221-41 The Mets do much better when baseball fans are forced to choose between the Mets and the Yankees. While the Yankees lose a statistically insignificant 1 percentage point of support on average, the Mets pick up 10 points of support. This seems to confirm the finding of a nonscientific Reddit poll from three years ago that found the Yankees were the most hated team among baseball fans. In other words, non-Yankee and non-Met fans may pick the Mets when forced to choose between the two of them, simply because they dislike the Yankees more. This year, though, the Mets beat the Yankees on the open-ended version of the question — the version in which they have always done worse. If we take this year’s result and apply the same boost the Mets typically receive in the other version of the question (where fans were forced to choose between the two teams), they would probably hold a 10-point head-to-head advantage over the Yankees. That’s pretty mind-boggling, considering the Mets were down 22 points on that type of question just three years ago.The Mets need to keep winning, however, if they want to maintain an edge over the Yankees. As I wrote about three years ago, the Mets seem to pick up fans when they win and shed them when they lose, but the same didn’t hold true for the Yankees. Now, it seems the Yankees may also gain or lose fans depending on their record. (Before this year, Quinnipiac had never polled after a season in which the Mets made the playoffs — or World Series — more recently than the Yankees.) In the chart below, I’ve plotted the difference between the percentages of Met fans and Yankee fans in New York City against the difference in how long it had been since each team had been in the playoffs.1For the sake of simplicity, I’m using the version of Quinnipiac’s question that allows baseball fans to choose any team, not just the Mets and the Yankees. However, there’s a clear correlation with either question. 3/24/1459%37%-22 3/25/095542-13 Fav. in a Subway Series Average5531-24 4/1/024738-9 Indeed, the Yankee lead climbed as high as 41 points five years ago. That survey was taken after a season in which the Yankees had made the playoffs, while the Mets hadn’t appeared in the postseason in six years. Now the tables have turned: The Mets have made the playoffs two years in a row, even appearing in the World Series in 2015. Meanwhile, the Yankees didn’t make the playoffs last year and they haven’t made a World Series since 2009.Before this year, the only time the Mets ever came close to the Yankees was in May 2007. That year, 49 percent of New York City baseball fans said they’d root for the Yankees in a Subway Series against the Mets, while 48 percent said they’d root the other way. Recent results had an influence then, too — the Mets made it to the National League Championship Series (before losing to the St. Louis Cardinals) in 2006, while the Yankees were knocked out in the American League Division Series. The Mets’ triumph in this year’s poll, however, is far more impressive than when they nearly overtook the Yankees 10 years ago. You’ll notice in the table that there are two types of questions Quinnipiac has asked on this subject in the past: Sometimes they asked baseball fans who they’d root for in a World Series matchup between the Mets and the Yankees, as they did when the Mets came close to the Yankees in 2007. Other times, fans are asked who their favorite baseball team is overall. (That is, fans can choose teams besides the Mets and Yankees.) And in four surveys, Quinnipiac asked both versions of the question. 7/26/015432-22 3/24/146159-2273710 5/28/074948-1 POLL DATETEAM IN MLBIN SUBWAY SERIESDIFFTEAM IN MLBIN SUBWAY SERIESDIFF 5/28/0750%49%-136%48%12 Source: Quinnipiac University YANKEES ARE FAVORITE …METS ARE FAVORITE … 5/28/075036-14 NYC baseball fans like the Mets more than the Yankees for the first time in 20 years Among New York City baseball fansSource: Quinnipiac University Average5138-13 8/31/075152135449 7/28/986028-32 3/25/095633-23 3/31/1743%45%+2 7/29/115926-33 The Mets are more popular when they’re pitted against the Yankees 4/1/055136-15 7/18/064637-9 8/31/075244-8 Poll DateYankeesMetsMets margin Perhaps what’s most interesting about the chart is that, based on prior trends, we would have expected the Yankees to have more fans than the Mets even now. That is, in an environment where the Mets were doing slightly better than the Yankees, the pattern would have been for the Yankees to still have a larger fan base. That might mean Quinnipiac’s new poll is too friendly to the Mets — certainly a possibility, given the margin of error. It could also be the case that the Mets are receiving a “bonus” because they were in the playoffs last year and the Yankees weren’t. Again, we can’t really test that phenomenon because in every previous survey, the Yankees had been in the playoffs as recently (or far more so) than the Mets had been.Either way, it’s clear that New York City is a two-baseball-team town right now. The Mets have caught up to — or perhaps even surpassed — their older brother. Yankee fans need their team to start winning again, or they’ll have to get used to seeing a lot more Mets caps on the subway as they make their commute. 8/15/136223-39 FAVORITE TEAM IN MLB
