Fight to keep college loan deductions

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionPlease, Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer, we need your help. You as well, Rep. Paul Tonko.I’m a PhD student at the University at Albany, SUNY.I’m getting my PhD in political science, and I’ve written before about my fear that the new tax plan will eliminate the tuition deduction and the student loan interest deduction. This appears to be an attack on students.Education in this country is very expensive, and even with tuition scholarships and assistantships, education is still costly. Most students at my level live at a subsistence level and make a lot of sacrifices for their education. Our contracts don’t let us have second or third jobs (nor do we really have time for them), so a tuition deduction and being able to deduct student loan interest are valuable benefits that make the whole process affordable.I want to be a college professor and return to public service, and these measures by the GOP are making such aspirations difficult if not impossible. Please communicate to your colleagues the importance of these deductions for working students.Keith PrebleRotterdamMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsRotterdam convenience store operator feels results of having Stewart’s as new neighborEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesCar hits garage in Rotterdam Sunday morning; Garage, car burnlast_img read more
