Nintendo’s Wii U hasn’t even been out for a full month yet, and now it has already been hacked to run the Homebrew Channel. The Homebrew Channel — called such because it originated on the Wii and used a interface based on the operating system’s TV channel — is essentially the console’s version of custom firmware, allowing users to not only run pirated software, but custom created content as well. The HackMii team released a new installer, HackMii Installer v1.2, which slaps the Homebrew Channel v1.1.2 onto the Wii U. Interestingly, HackMii notes that Nintendo managed to find the exploit the team used to get the Homebrew Channel onto the Wii, but never updated the operating system with the fix until the Wii U OS. The team hasn’t actually hacked the Wii U itself, but rather the console’s Wii mode, which is the mode that allows the Wii U to play Wii and Virtual Console games. From there, the installer and hack works as normal, thus affecting the Wii U. Technically, the Wii U remains protected for now, though this exploit could easily lead toward the Homebrew Channel running on the Wii U proper, blowing the console wide open for future hacks and custom software. If the channel’s history on the Wii is any indication, Nintendo will relentlessly release updates in an attempt to quash the Homebrew Channel, which in turn will spark the scene to release various workarounds. This, of course, will signal a familiar never-ending dance between corporate game developer and homebrew scene, both working to circumvent the other until the the next console cycle makes the desire for homebrew on this cycle irrelevant.Remember, if you install the Homebrew Channel on your Wii U, that effectively ends your console’s warranty, so make sure you know what you’re doing.via HackMii
