A Home Where the Digital Wallpaper Changes When Grandma Visits

first_imgDigital wallpaper in a teenage boy’s room can change when Grandma comes to visit and the room becomes hers. Microsoft Home is designed to be the model of what a home may look like in five to ten years. It’s a home that has the elements of touch and gestures to to display contextual data on walls, counters and tables. It is an example of the connections between devices and physical objects. It shows how intelligent systems change the reality for how a room functions and people interact. It’s an environment that has a deeper relationship with data which in turn affects our preconceptions about reality.I took some notes using Google Docs on my Android. Gave me a bit sense for this house as I tapped as best I could on the micro tap keyboard of the MyTouch 3G that I find increasingly unsatisfying. The experience helped me realize that no one could live in such a house now if dependent on a smartphone with a poor interface. It would be unmanageable. The home is connected and managed by machines that use the physical objects in the home to display what the homeowner wants to view, engage with or display. For example, In the area adjacent to the kitchen, a picture cabinet uses object recognition to scan 3D pieces. The cabinet then displays correlating images that appear in window panes. For example, a souvenir piece of the Eiffel Tower triggered a search to display images related to a vacation in Paris. The tour went on to show a dining room table that doubles as a visual knowledge base. I saw a plant with a sensor that notified our guide it needed a bit of water. The plant delivered the information to our guide’s smartphone which she then placed on a platter by the front door. The platter became a digital screen that displayed the news about the plant and other little things that people check when they walk into their homes.I rang the doorbell but no one was home. The doorbell took my picture. My guide saw the image of me on her smartphone. She was right there but might have been at Pikes Market. In this home you don’t need to be there to let someone in. It all seemed plausible to some extent. It’s a reminder of the compute capability that comes with cloud managed systems that can control the experience and command physical objects to do tasks whether with people are there or not. It’s a home that I’d like to live in. But first I’d have to get a better smartphone. Related Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostinglast_img read more

How to Shoot a Training Montage for a Sports Film

first_imgTraining montages are central to every sports film. In this video tutorial, we find out what goes into shooting a great one.To figure out the best way to approach a training montage, we were lucky enough to find Olympian Steven Benedict, who agreed to be our test subject. We used the gym where he trains in Culver City. Here’s what we learned.Rocky set the standard for training montages in 1976. That first film inspired countless other sequences because it tapped into something primal. It uses a central motif — in this case Rocky’s running — to show the hero progressing physically and metaphorically from his humble, working-class origins to the top of the world, represented by the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.We chose five exercises to juxtapose against a tracking shot of Steven running. What I learned was not to get too caught up in any one setup, but to get coverage of each one from a variety of angles and shot sizes. I also tried to get progression — from beginning an exercise to struggling with it and finally perfecting it. I shot a blend of wide-angle shots that show the exercise, as well as tighter shots that show the athlete’s face, and what’s going through their mind as they struggle. You can fake shots if you need to (by placing the athlete’s legs on a box for close-ups) so you can get the number of reps you want at a consistent intensity. It also helps to shoot two or three cameras so you can get multiple shots on the same take.We shot for two and a half hours and ended up with a total of ninety-six usable shots from our A Cam, the Canon C200 and B cam, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K. Once I had the shots I needed, I made subedits in Premiere of each exercise, then intercut these with the main edit of Steven running. Then, I added music, and tweaked the cut so that big moments coincided with key moments in the music. I think what we ended up with has impact and dynamism, and it tells a story — all in just over a minute.Beyond just training montages, I really found it helpful to analyze the same kind of scene in multiple movies, to see what worked and what didn’t, and then try it out for myself. I encourage filmmakers out there to do the same kind of thing with a type of scene they love.Looking for more tutorials on film and video production? Operations to salvage MV Wisdom suspended for 15 days

first_imgEfforts to salvage cargo vessel MV Wisdom, stuck on the Juhu beach for the past one week, were abandoned for the third day on Sunday with officials stating that operations have been hampered for at least a fortnight.”The salvaging operations have been called off for today and we will have to wait for another fortnight before we can reattempt it,” Director General of Shipping, S B Agnihotri, said.According to officials, they faced operational constraints due to engine trouble in the lead tug which forced them to abandon their efforts till the next spring tide after a fortnight, when attempt to refloat the vessel would be made afresh. However, there is no fear of any oil or cargo related pollution due to this, they said. The officials also requested the public to keep clear of the vessel for their own safety and also to allow salvers to retrieve their equipment and function without any hindrance. The ship, which ran aground last Saturday, has to move by over 40 degrees from its current position for the tugs to start pulling it deeper into the sea. However, the 145 metre cargo vessel did not sufficiently respond to the salvage efforts. The freighter was being tugged to the Alang ship breaking yard in Gujarat from Colombo when the cable to its tow boat snapped, causing the vessel to go adrift.Initially, it was feared that it will crash into the Bandra-Worli Sealink, but it drifted northwards to Juhu and ran aground. As it was being taken to be dismantled, the vessel has no cargo or fuel, reducing the possibility of any immediate threat to the city’s marine ecology.advertisement- With PTI inputsFor more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img read more
