State TV signal no longer being carried by Intelsat

first_img RSF_en Reporters Without Borders has established that since 24 December, La Première, the leading TV channel of Côte d’Ivoire’s state-owned broadcaster Radio-Télévision Ivoirienne (RTI), has not been available in France or in neighbouring African countries, where it is normally carried by the Canal + Horizon satellite service. It would seem this is because its signal has been suspended or is being jammed. RTI is usually transmitted by Intelsat 903 (a satellite operated by the US company Intelsat) and is retransmitted in Côte d’Ivoire’s provinces, other African countries and Europe. Over-the-air transmission in Abidjan continues to operate normally.La Première director-general Félicien Koffi told Reporters Without Borders: “Our status with Intelsat is fine. That is not the problem. We don’t know who is behind this but if it is an attempt to isolate us, we can only deplore it.”Although concerned that RTI began several weeks ago to behave like one faction’s propaganda tool rather than a public service media, Reporters Without Borders believes that jamming or any action designed to prevent a news media’s dissemination is never an appropriate response and regards it as a violation of media freedom. Geoff Dossetter, external affairs director, Freight Transport Association

first_imgThe UK economy is in dire need of the construction of purpose-built, efficient and adequate roads to improve bakery delivery and cut the awful cost of congestion. UK transport needs more than a sticking plaster; it needs a major operation.Following the successful experiment of running traffic on the hard shoulder of the M42 in Birmingham, the Department for Transport is to consider extending the operation to other congested motorways. All the news from the M42 trial has been good: reduced journey times; increased reliability; a reduction in accidents; and benefits to motorists, commercial vehicle operators, the environment and the economy. Yet the M42 scheme cost £100 million and has involved road strengthening, the construction of refuge lay-bys, overhead message gantries, CCTV and, key to it all, a sophisticated computer operation to determine when the ’hard shoulder running’ is turned on and off.Using the hard shoulder can inject some quick extra capacity into an overburdened motorway network and is relatively cheap compared to the construction of new roads. The FTA believes the experiment should be repeated elsewhere, but there are no plans for such a scheme on the M25. Instead, full-blown road widening will take place. And that is good news.last_img read more

Xavi warns Barcelona not to engage Liverpool, Arsenal stars

first_img Barcelona legend, Xavi has explained how Liverpool winger Sadio Mane and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would find it hard to adapt if they moved to the LaLiga giants. Mane has become an irreplaceable part of Jurgen Klopp‘s side in the past three seasons, coming up with a number of match-winning contributions to keep the Reds on the charge for a first league title in 30 years. Aubameyang, meanwhile, boasts the impressive record of having scored 61 goals in 97 Arsenal appearances, including 17 in the Premier League this season. The Gabon international – who has a year left on his contract – is more likely to leave than Mane this summer and Barcelona have been linked with the striker alongside Inter Milan marksman Lautaro Martinez. Xavi, however, has explained that neither Aubameyang nor Mane would likely fit in at Barca, who need a player who can perform in “small spaces”. “Mane and Aubemayang can kill you in open space. But Barcelona need players who know how to move in small spaces,” the legendary midfielder said. “I am thinking about player who would adapt to Barcelona and it’s not easy to find one. Samuel Eto’o was perfect as is Luis Suarez right now.” Suarez moved to Barcelona from Liverpool in 2014 but reports have suggested that Martinez is being eyed as the long-term replacement for the 33-year-old. Indeed, Barcelona have been stretched for attackers this season with Suarez, who underwent knee surgery earlier this year, joining Ousmane Dembele on the treatment table. Reports have also suggested that Neymar is angling for a return to Barcelona, something Xavi hopes can be arranged. “Football-wise, he is among the three or five best in the world,” Xavi said of the Brazilian. “I hope that he returns to Barcelona. read also:Xavier: Nigeria has no replacement for Okocha “He was his teammate.
