Drake Relays Presented by Hy-Vee Adds Women’s High Jump And Unveils Shuttle Hurdle Relay Teams

first_imgDES MOINES, Iowa – As the countdown ticks down to the the start of the 2016 Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee, Relays director Brian Brown announced another wave of Relays news and events on Tuesday, April 19.The 2016 Drake Relays Presented by Hy-Vee has added an additional Rio Olympic Games preview to the slate with a star-studded women’s high jump field. The event will give fans to the opportunity to see many Relays favorites along with one of track and field’s future stars, Vashti Cunningham. Cunningham, an 18-year-old from Las Vegas, Nev., recently soared on to the world stage by winning the Indoor World Championship after claiming the USA Indoor title by clearing 6-6.25. The Drake Relays will be her second meet since turning professional following her world indoor title. She is also the daughter of former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham.The upstart Cunningham will be challenged by a veteran field that includes three-time Olympian, Relays Hall of Famer and American record holder Chaunte Lowe along with five-time Olympian Amy Acuff. Weeks ago, the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee announced world class fields in the men’s 110-meter hurdles and women’s 100-meter hurdles while promising even more excitement for the shuttle hurdle relay.Today, Brown delivered on that promise with the unveiling of teams for a one-of-a-kind coed shuttle hurdle relay. The event, set for Friday’s Hy-Vee Night at the Relays will pair some of the top men’s and women’s hurdlers together in four, four-person teams to vie for the Relays title.Those teams will include Jasmin Stowers and Jackie Coward teamming up with Aries Merritt and Hansle Parchment. A second team features Dawn Harper-Nelson, Queen Harrison, David Oliver and Andrew Riley. Also competing is a squad of Kristi Castlin, Nia Ali, Ronnie Ash and Spencer Adams. The final team is made up of Brianna Rollins, Kendra Harrison, Aleec Harrison and Omar McLeod.Combined, those 16 competitors boast six Olympic appearances and five Olympic medals with nine of them finishing the 2015 season ranked in the top 10 in the world.The 2016 Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee begins next week with action starting inside Drake Stadium on April 27 and continuing through April 30.
