A Lazy OutOfShape Amateur Won Two More Super Bowls Than Tony Romo

The list of sub-par quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl despite being nothing more than “game managers” just grew by one. FiveThirtyEight’s own Walt Hickey has joined the ranks of Brad Johnson, Doug Williams and Trent Dilfer.Sure, Walt did it in a video game, while the other three did it while wearing cleats in real life, but the taste of victory was just as sweet. Walt’s triumph is courtesy of two Madden savants, Tim Curry and Luke Barr, who answered the call on our sports podcast Hot Takedown a few weeks ago. We laid down a challenge to see if anyone could win it all in Madden NFL 16 with Walt as their quarterback. Curry and Barr turned Walt’s depressing player ratings into a championship.Below are notes the two victors sent us about their journeys. As promised, we’ll be giving them a shoutout on this week’s podcast and sending them a signed poster of Walt in full pads.Curry, who won with the Philadelphia Eagles, provides a thrilling game report:I have done it. After smacking the Cowboys in the divisional game and beating the Seahawks in the NFC championship, Walt Hickey and the Eagles defeated the Buffalo Bills in an epic comeback, 21-17. After falling behind 14-0, Walt threw a pick with less than a minute left in the first half, leading to a Bills field goal. But the Eagles came out swinging in the second half, with Ryan Mathews taking a pitch from Walt 80 yards to the house. In the fourth quarter, Mathews hit another long option run, being caught at the 10. This time DeMarco Murray took it in for 6, bringing the game to 17-14 with just under two minutes to play. After the Bills recovered the onside kick attempt, the Eagles brought the house to stop the run three times, using up all three timeouts, but getting the ball back at their own 20 with 1:30 left. This time it was a mix of Murray and Mathews leading the way, with Murray taking a short pass 20 yards and Mathews finding another 30 on a pitch. With just under a minute, DeMarco found the end zone to give the Eagles the lead. The defense held, and Walt Hickey was a Super Bowl champion! And here’s Barr, who won with the Dallas Cowboys:Some observations:I ended with an 11-5 record, the 2nd seed and a first-round bye.He cannot throw downfield. Any throw more than ten yards downfield was almost always intercepted. The best routes to run were definitely screens and swing passes, he could hit those fairly reliably.Curl routes against bad cornerbacks in man coverage were also okay, but if he missed, it was usually an interception.I chose the Cowboys to play with because I thought the offensive line would help. Joseph Randle led the league in rushing with 1759 yards. Before the season I signed free agents Aldon Smith and Terence Newman and traded a draft pick for CB Josh Robinson. Terence Newman led the league in INTs with 12.Hickey’s quarterback rating of 42.6 was actually better than Matt Flynn’s who had a 40.2 rating on 76 attempts.Of Hickey’s 1872 yards, 1457 were gained after the catch. Here is Walt’s game log, individual stats and team stats. Walt is galled that, as a New York Giants fan, he won the Super Bowl with the Eagles and Cowboys. But that does make him better than Tony Romo and Sam Bradford. So he’s got that, at least. And there you have it. Once again, congrats to Tim and Luke. Now please go outside. Read more: How Madden Helped A Schlub Like Me Make It Into The NFL read more

Dutch concert cancelled for terror threat

first_imgA van with a Spanish numberplate near the concert venue Maassilo is seen during police investigations after a rock concert was cancelled due to a terror threat, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Photo: AFPDutch police are investigating possible terror links after arresting a Spaniard driving a van containing gas canisters close to a rock concert which was abruptly cancelled over fears of an attack. The man “was arrested and taken to the police station,” Rotterdam police said in a Tweet, following a tip-off from Spanish authorities. The arrest came little under a week after twin car-bomb attacks in Spain killed 15 people, in attacks claimed by the Islamic State group.Dutch bomb squad officials “were investigating the van” which was found just two streets away from the Maassilo concert hall where an American rock band was due to play, they added.Earlier in the evening Dutch authorities decided to cancel the concert by Californian group Allah-Las in Europe’s largest port city after a tip-off from Spanish police around 5:30pm (1530 GMT) about a possible terror attack.“In the early evening I was warned by telephone that we had received a threat which had implications for an American concert at the Maassilo in Rotterdam,” the city’s mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb, told a hastily-called press conference.“This signal came from the Spanish police to the Dutch police,” he added. But Aboutaleb, the country’s first Muslim and immigrant-born mayor who has spoken out against Islamic terror groups, added an investigation was under way and “we cannot say now if the van with the canisters was linked to the threat”.The four-piece band, from Los Angeles, had been escorted from the concert hall by police wearing bullet-proof vests. In a statement sent to AFP, they said they were “unharmed and are very grateful to the Rotterdam police and other responsible agencies for detecting the potential threat before anyone was hurt.”Rotterdam police said that afterwards an officer “stationed close to the venue decided to stop a van that he saw driving at around 21:30 hrs”.“The van had Spanish plates and was driven by a Spanish national. Inside the van were a couple of gas bottles. Whether there is a link with the terror threat is being looked into,” the statement in English said, adding “the driver was taken into custody”.Concert hall evacuatedThe international connections of the cell of mostly Moroccan nationals behind the Spanish attacks are being probed as investigators retrace their movements to France and Belgium.Spanish police carried out new raids overnight Tuesday to Wednesday after vehicles ploughed into pedestrians on Barcelona’s busy Las Ramblas boulevard and a seaside promenade in the resort town of Cambrils.Fifteen people were killed and more than 120 others were wounded.Spanish court documents have shown that at least 500 litres of acetone, large quantities of nails and detonators as well as gas canisters were found in raids on a house in the town of Alcanar, south of Barcelona. The Rotterdam building where Wednesday’s concert was to be held, which can hold about 1,000 people, was searched by the Dutch anti-terror squad after the crowd had been evacuated. The Netherlands has so far been spared from the slew of terror attacks which have rocked its closest European neighbours in past years. But amid a number of scares here in recent months, and reports that people linked to some of the attacks may have crossed briefly into the country, concerned top Dutch security and intelligence officials have been keeping a wary eye on events.A spokesman for the Dutch justice ministry told AFP the threat level in The Netherlands remained at “four” out of a possible five.“Nothing has changed for the moment,” Lodewijk Hekking said, meaning the threat levels remains that there is the real possibility of an attack in the Netherlands.last_img read more

Heritage Tours Told to Vacate Handy House After 24 Years

first_imgBy Dr. Sybil C. Mitchell, Special to the New Tri-State DefenderHeritage Tours, which principal operator Elaine Turner describes as the state’s first African-American-owned tour company, no longer is overseeing the blue-and-white shotgun house that reflects the meager beginnings of W.C. Handy, renowned as the “Father of the Blues.”Situated on the east end of the Beale Street Entertainment District, the house is where a young William Christopher Handy lived at the turn of the century. A letter from the Downtown Memphis Commission (DMC) informed Turner that the operating services of Heritage Tours would not be part of the Handy home’s future. Heritage had been the operator for 24 years. For many, the W.C. Handy Home & Museum had become synonymous with Elaine Turner and Heritage Tours, the operators since 1995. Now that tie has been severed. (Photos: Karanja A. Ajanaku)The letter – forwarded to Turner on January 2 – floored her. She had until February 2 to completely vacate the property, as possession was being taken by the DMC.The DMC letter simply stated: “After much discussion, we’d like to inform you that we will no longer require the services of Heritage Tours, Inc., as operator of the W.C. Handy Home & Museum as of February 2, 2019.”Jennifer Oswalt, president and CEO of DMC, told The New Tri-State on Tuesday that the changeover move was a matter of economics from Beale Street Management’s standpoint.“For the significant capital investment we are making in repairs of the house and courtyard, we felt that it was the best decision going forward as we work on devising plans to increase awareness of the house and visitors,” said Oswalt.“Also, we are responsible for reporting on the condition of the property to Mr. Handy’s grandson, and we felt we could best do that if we were in possession of the property.”Jon Shivers, who sent the letter to Turner, also informed her that DMC was in compliance with the 30-day notice for terminating the agreement with Beale Street Management. The letter advised Turner to acknowledge receipt. Turner said she made numerous calls to Shivers and left messages, with no indication of a response.Turner also was instructed to make an inventory of everything inside the museum, determining what belonged to Heritage, what the Handy family owned, and which items belonged to Beale Street Management.Turner reached out for two Memphis City Council members: Martavius Jones and Joe Brown.“When Mrs. Turner called me, I told her to write them a letter,” said Brown. Why, and why now? It’s the same way sharecropping is done. Black people are used like animals to work the land, but they get no reward from it. Mrs. Turner initiated that whole project, and now, it’s just being taken away. Just, ‘get out and we’ll take it from here.’ It’s just not right.Turner wrote Shivers on January 29.“I have made several attempts to reach you by phone after the receipt of your letter,” her letter read. “This letter (to vacate) comes as a total shock since we have been in frequent communication with you, and there was no indication that you had other plans that did not include Heritage Tours.”She ended her letter with a request for a meeting that she never got.For Councilman Jones, the issue of respect – and the manner in which Turner and Heritage were dealt with – matters.“I don’t know how or why the Downtown Memphis Commission feels they can run Handy House better than Elaine Turner and Heritage House,” said Jones. “I was talking about Beale Street Management from the first day I got here (on the council). They have no experience whatsoever in running an entertainment district.“They are learning on the job just like anybody else. And then, was it done in a respectful way? I think that’s a very good question to ask the Downtown Memphis Commission. Do they feel this process was done in a respectful manner?”In a timeline detailed in her letter to Shivers, Turner asserted that in 2017, DMC reached out to offer assistance with upkeep. In November 2018, DMC informed her that they had received money from the city and would send a contractor to begin work on repair of a busted water pipe behind a wall and the resulting water damage, Turner wrote in her letter. In December of 2018, DMC sent a photographer to Handy House for photos to add to the Beale Street website. On January 2, two weeks later, Turner received the vacate letter with the notice that the DMC was taking over the operation.“That’s what the plan was all along,” said Brown. “All of this construction and new projects downtown don’t include us. Black businesses get 22 percent set-aside for contracts when we are 76 percent of the population. …They are taking everything we’ve got. Look at what they’re doing to Tom Lee Park.”Oswalt said Beale Street Management is not cutting Turner out all together.“We look forward to collaborating with Heritage Tours and other tour companies on how we can move forward together.”Heritage Tours moved out of the W.C. Handy Home & Museum property on February 10.“We’ve tried to keep Handy’s legacy alive,” Turner said. “We have the W.C. Handy Heritage Awards every year at Handy’s birthday. …We’ve tried to keep that name in the forefront.”The date Heritage was given to move out fell during African-American History Month.Said Turner: “Can you believe it?”(TSD Associate Publisher/Executive Editor Karanja A. Ajanaku contributed to this report.)last_img read more

Rep Pscholka hits icy water to benefit Michigan Special Olympics

first_img05Mar Rep. Pscholka hits icy water to benefit Michigan Special Olympics Categories: News Michigan’s winter has been frigid, and it was an even colder day than usual for state Rep. Al Pscholka as he took a dive into a pool of icy water on the lawn of the state Capitol as part of the Legislative Polar Plunge to support Michigan Special Olympics.Rep. Pscholka, dressed as the Grinch, braved below-freezing temperatures for the fourth consecutive year to participate in the event.  The Stevensville Republican in past years has taken the plunge dressed as a shark, a bear and a penguin.  More than a dozen lawmakers this year participated in the event, with temperatures in Lansing reading just 16 degrees.“It’s been an honor to participate for the fourth year in a row and raise money for the Special Olympics and all of the athletes it supports,” said Pscholka. “With so many of my colleagues coming out to bear the cold, not only does this event raise awareness for this worthy cause, but it’s fun too.”Nearly 21,000 athletes annually participate in Special Olympics Michigan, which is a year-round program offering sports for those with intellectual disabilities. The ultimate goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate and receive respect as members of their communities.“Many of my constituents in the 79th District participate in the Special Olympics, and some have advanced to national competitions,” Pscholka said. “This is a small price to pay to support them.”last_img read more

Frances TF1 Group has put the final piece in plac

first_imgFrance’s TF1 Group has put the final piece in place to secure universal fixed-line IPTV distribution after striking a deal with Iliad Telecom/Free.As with previous deals, TF1 said the agreement with Free covered both its linear channels and associated non-linear services, with Free subscribers set to benefit from “innovative functionality” from new services. The agreement covers catch-up services on the MYTF1 service, with extended windows for content, the availability of some programmes in an avant-première window ahead of their airing on terrestrial TV and unspecified advanced functionality that will “allow free to launch new services”.In addition, the deal will bring two time-shifted channels to Free customers – TF1+1 and TMC+1 – later this year, as well as event-based programming in 4K UHD.The carriage deal also covers digital channels TV Breizh, Ushaïa TV, Histoire and TFOU Max.TF1 did not reveal terms of the agreement, which appears to bring Free into line with other fixed-line service providers that have made concessions to secure an agreement. The broadcaster had been in dispute with IPTV providers Orange and Free along with pay TV operator Canal+ over its demand for retransmission fees for the carriage of its channels, having earlier struck carriage agreements with Bouygues Telecom – with which it has a shared owner in the form of Bouygues Group – and Altice France/SFR, which has itself called for retransmission fees for its own channels.TF1 struck an agreement with Orange in March after a long dispute with the operator, leaving Free as the only hold-out among fixed-line telecom players. The broadcaster has yet to strike a deal with Canal+, which briefly suspended broadcasting TF1’s channels in March.TF1’s agreement with Free also follows a deal between the IPTV provider and the country’s other main commercial broadcaster M6 Group, which had also demanded retransmission fees. That deal meant that M6 has struck agreements with all the main distributors in France, including Canal+.last_img read more
